The Oosterschelde of my Life
|

| Not everyday a milestone in one's life is experienced. Today was one of those rare days both Karolina and I have been thinking of for a long time. The feelings were extraordinary. Today was a big day. We have sailed the North Sea! |

| From an objective point of view it was not much different from a sailing trip from Ystad into the Baltic Sea. An hour out and an hour in again. But for us, this was the North Sea! Today was a beautiful day with blue sky and a force 3 westerly wind. The day was chosen with care, so the first experiences with the North Sea would become positive. And they were in deed! We motored from Roompot to Roompot Sluis, the lock into freedom. We had driven by car to this lock some days before and had stood as an audience watching the actors in the lock. Now it was the other way round. While entering the lock, we could see tourists standing by the lock up there with one view back into the Oosterschelde and with one view out into the free horizon. We had noticed that the boats going out and in through the lock looked quite ordinary - no extreme boats or crews. And now it was our turn to enter the lock, just like any crew on any other boat. I wondered what the people up there were thinking. Were they aware of the big step we were about to take? |

| Senta's cosmopolitian Christening party at a Restaurant with Jenny's family and friends | ||||
| Karolina and I felt totally at home in this wonderful spiritual surrounding. Had we not also lived in Switzerland with similar friends, and was not Karolina Swedish and I partly German? Also Jessica and Jonathan were brought up with two languages, despite the fact that German was challenging to keep up, since I am the only one speaking it at home. And Jessica's and Jonathan's cousins in Phoenix put further cultural spice to our family! We had similar things to talk about with Jenny and her friends, similar dreams and thoughts. The world seemed so wide and unlimited like the unbroken horizon of the the North Sea we just were entering after leaving the Roompot Sluis. One of Jenny's friend were on their way to Italy, Holland is just 1 hour drive to the North. Germany around the corner and France is often used for dining, when Jenny and Andreas feel for some special food. Everywhere Euros and Europe seem to be one big family. 6 000 Swedes belong to the Swedish Church in Brussels, where Senta was christened, so at least that many Swedes live in the capital of Europe. The next Swedish Church was in Antwerpen, where all the Swedes working for Volvo in Gent live. 6 000, only in Brussels! If you take all places in the World where Swedes are and compare with the total population of just 8 Mio, I start to wonder who stays in Sweden and who moves out? |

| These were my feelings when we set sail in the North Sea and while I was watching the horizon from the North over West to South. The world seemed united; with England close by to North West, Denmark, Germany to North East and if you decided to sail to the warmth, France with all its wonderful atmosphere and restaurants was on its way to continue via Biscay to Spain and Portugal. Thereafter, it was just a matter of taste if you prefered the culture, history, languages, wine and food of the Mediterranean or, if you instead opt for the Atlantic and the West Indies. Or why not to the Azores, Madeira and teh Canaries? Where should we go? The North Sea opened our eyes and invited us to new exciting places, new parts in life. And surprisingly enough, the sea was not rough, the tidal streams not scary, the wind not hostile. Instead, the sun was reflecting its warmth in the calm sea with the bow of ZEEPAARD slowly moving in the waves. We were free! For some hours we had left the Oostershelde and experienced the exciting temptations of life! Instead of following the call of the horizon, we rounded Hompels, a small sandback in the entrance to the Oosterschelde. We went out against the tides and back with the tides. The difference in ground speed was, of course, impressing. Instead of one knot (-20%) against, we had 1 knot (+20%) with us, so by using the tides you can make impressive speed and thus distance. It is just like in life, I thought: by using the tides, your life can become interesting and easy going, and if you do not take the tides into account, you could have a lot of force against you. But when are the tides of life favorable? How long should we stay in the Oosterschelde, waiting for the right tides of life, to leave the Oosterschelde of our lives? After some time, we were back to the Roompot Sluis and went back into the Oosterschelde. Into the confined space. It felt like returning to home, returning to the Southern part of Sweden. While being a wonderful place to live in - safe, nice and sheltered I, at the same time, miss the open skies and friends with equally open views of Europe and the world. Swedish newspapers, news and people are much too much putting Sweden and Swedish as the only truth in the world. How else could Sweden believe that they ,by working in the European Union, could convince the rest of Europe to adopt Swedish alcoholic rules or taxes? Today, we decided against sailing to France or England, we even decided not to sail to the nearest harbour Vlissingen. Instead, we returned back into the Oosterschelde, just as we tomorrow will leave ZEEPAARD and return by car to the Oosterschelde of our lives, which is Ystad. But the North Sea showed itself from its nicest side today and definitely invited us for more. We will always have the greatest respect for the North Sea, but it is definitely calling for us. When will we sail the North Sea again? |
