| Since both Karolina and me are Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, maths and Science is both fun and easy for us so explain. It is regarded as highly important and hence much time and effort is put into maths and science.
Maths is the easiest subject, we find, as long as Jessica and Jonathan are eager to learn. With a pedagogical maths book, it is just to start on page one and continue chapter after chapter. For Jessica, this works especially well and not much teaching is necessary. Jonathan seems to invest more time in explaining why he might not need to do all maths problems than actually get and solving them. Being more lazy than his bigger sister, he does not lack any self confidence either, believing that most problems are too easy for him anyway... In fact, the more complicated the problems, the more fun they are for him, but in maths it is of vital importance to also have the basics. Science with Jonathan is most rewarding. He is always eager to help solving technical problems or repairing things. Jessica's approach is more relaxed with less interest to understand machinery or electric. We have taken winches apart to clean them and discussed electrical power generation by rotation, be it the alternator on the engine or the DuoGen powered by passing water or wind. We have been experimenting onboard, which is considered fun by them both. Optics is one issue we have worked with lately, understanding reflection and refraction. We have thereafter experimented with simple machinery understanding Force, mass, distance and Work. Pulleys and blocks come in handy with water bottles as weight and ropes to pull. It is easy to share the fun of science with other boat kids, experimenting together on each other boats. Jessica joined a lesson on Koshlong, for instance, when they played with marbles understanding kinetic and potential energy. Maths and Science are the subjects we find the easiest and most fun onboard. |
