Museums, Outings from March 2006

1 March 2006: Fort Napoléon, Iles des Saintes, F.W.I.

We hiked up the steep hill to Fort Napoléon with its little museum on Iles des Saintes and saw iganas along the way. The museum is well worth a visit and the fort in an excellent condition. The iganas put us back to pre-historic feeling.

4 - 16 March 2006: Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua

Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour on Antigua is a living museum and must be one of the oldest repair yards in the world. There is a little museum showing the history of this site as well as some information about Lord Nelson.

23 March 2006: Botanic Garden, Deshais, Guadeloupe

While very expensive to enter, the Botanic Garden was a beautiful "collection" of the flora of the Caribbean. The children liked to feed the parrots best, but did also appreciate all the beautiful flowers and trees that we sometimes can have as a miniature in our kitchens at home.

4 April 2006: Island Taxi-Tour on Nevis

We took a Taxi (Teach Tours) and went up to the Golden Rock Plantation, which is an old suger plantation and now has been transformed into a luxurious hotell. Adjacent to the plantation, there was a beautiful 30-minutes walk into the rain forest, where we could see green back monkeys.

6 April 2006: Island Taxi-Tour on St Kitts

Similar to our tour on Nevis, we did a whole island tour circumnavigating St Kitts by minibus. We hiked the rain forest, saw pre-historic rock carving made 2500 B.C., visited Brimstone Hills Fort and saw the Rawlin Estate, which is an old sugger plantation with an interesting boatyard, building 12-m yacht, designed by Philip Walwyn in 1908.

8 April: Hiking the Volcano "The Quill" on Statia

A beautiful hike up "The Quill" on Statia leads all the way to the crater rim of the volcano stretching 600 meter above sea level. The crater is 300 m in diameter and an impressive view. Along the way, we saw snakes and lizards.
